If you write – published or not – chances are, there’s nothing you like more, than talking about writing with other writers. There’s a time and place, obviously (for example, if myself and writer friends go to a drinking establishment, chances are, we’ll be too busy propping up the bar and discussing our sales; other peoples sales, general book gossip than talking about the nuts and bolts of writing) but often, if I meet a writer friend for coffee we discuss our work in progress. We’re quite a nerdy bunch really, can’t get enough of discussing plot twists and characters and our vision for our books. We do, after all, spend most of our time alone, inside our own heads, so it’s nice to share the inner workings occasionally; ask friends’ opinions; share ideas and get advice. Often when I go over to see my friend Rowan (author of many books – her next, The Memory Book – is out in February and is absolutely stunning), in amongst drinking coffee and eating cake we discuss our WIPs and I always, always come away feeling encouraged and with a new idea or two. We help each other. I think it’s so important to have input like this and for writers in general to have someone to discuss their work with. I have had many informal ‘mentors’ over the years but have decided I’d like to do something a bit more formal and offer my services as a mentor myself. I feel that after four novels – five if you count the one I had to can (I know when it’s not working as well as working these days!) and several years of writing, I may be in a position, finally, to impart some wisdom! - Reading of your manuscript and initial discussion
- Weekly Skype or phone chats about your WIP and any problems you may be having / motivation needed!
- Help with editing your novel and getting it ready to send out to potential literary agents.
- Specific help with fiction writing problems: character development, plotting, dialogue.
- Help with wording your covering letter
- Oodles of motivation and encouragement.
